My little midwife

Dear Matthew

I'm sure I've probably mentioned it previously but this pregnancy we're doing things a little differently and using independent midwife care. The benefit of this (amongst many positives) is that Peta, our midwife, comes to our house for all of our appointments. She is an amazing woman who, if you can believe it, lets you kick her in the back and head while we're chatting and includes you in every part of the check up.

At our recent appointment last week you helped measure my fundus to ensure the baby/my belly is growing at the correct speed (roughly 1cm per week). She then used the Doppler to listen to the baby's heartbeat and you were quite captivated by this. So much so that yesterday while we were cuddling on the couch I suggested you see how big the baby is getting, so you went and grabbed a couple of measuring tapes and got measuring. You then used my phone as a Doppler and tried to hear the baby's heartbeat. Talk about making your mama's heart melt :)

I'm so pleased you're starting to really embrace your sibling, just in time too as he or she will be joining us in around two months! No matter what though, you will always be my first baby, the beautiful boy who turned us into a family.

Love you baby boy,

Your new kindy

Dear Matthew

In the last week you have started at a daycare centre in the city for a day a week. We chose to swap you from your original kindy to this 'new kindy' for a few reasons and I'm so glad we did - you seem to really enjoy it and the teachers are warm and kind.

The bonus is that you get to go into work on the train with your dad once a week which you love. I also don't need to worry about getting you to kindy with a newborn in a few months, which I was really stressing about given you hated the car so much that I was worried your sibling would too and just leaving the house would be traumatising. Now you get to have fun all day and your dad will drop you off and bring you home.

We also get to see what you've been up to all day through their app (see photos below) and get a full report of the fun things you've been doing so we can chat with you about them in the evening.

I was originally worried as your old kindy was only 2 x 2.5 hour sessions and your new kindy is one full day but you took to it like a duck to water and I'm just so proud of you.

Love you,

Winter at the beach

Dear Matthew

Last Sunday, despite it being winter, was a glorious day (something like 27 degrees) so we headed down to the dog beach after your dad finished his soccer game so Soda could have a run around with the other dogs and you could enjoy building sandcastles.

As you can see from the photos you were very successful in building a big mound (and a big hole) and proceeded then to cover my legs with sand. Nothing like a bit of natural exfoliation!

You then had fun digging up sand with your dad and throwing it into the surf. You also enjoyed racing the waves back to the shore and only managed to get a little wet.

It was special to be able to spend this time together in such beautiful weather. Hopefully we can find a few more fun activities we can do in the next couple of months before our family expands again!

Love you baby boy,

WA Day

Dear Matthew

At the start of the month we celebrated WA Day. We caught up in the morning with Mother's Group down at Piney Lakes and you had a lot of fun playing on the refurbished playground and feeling the ducks with the other kids.

Afterwards we went down to Fremantle for a nice lunch together at the Sail and Anchor. The Sail and Anchor holds special meaning for your dad and I, as it's where we had some of our wedding photos with our wedding party in between the ceremony and reception and also took you there as a newborn (probably at about ten days old). You enjoyed eating chippies while strategically pooing under the table.

We then went for a walk around and ended up on the Esplanade. I walked through the markets that were there for WA Day (and bought a lovely teething necklace for use with your sibling) while your dad took you on the playground. You then enjoyed playing in some of the kids' activity tents and your dad and I checked our the cool sand sculptures (a couple of swans of course).

It was a great day and we will definitely be returning next year for the same public holiday.

Love you Matteus,
