School holiday activities

Dear Matthew and Toby

Over the October school holidays we have got up to a lot of fun things together.

Matt, your daddy took you to see Shrek the Musical under the big top one evening, which I'm told you loved, especially the singing donkey. Your daddy sent me the below photos of you and I'm so glad you had fun as Shrek was one of my favourite movies as a kid.

I also signed you up for a couple of free kids sessions run by the City of Melville. The first one was the 'Eagle Lady' show at the Bull Creek Library where we watched a presentation that included two falcons, two owls and an eagle. Matt, at the end you got to hold and touch the eagle, which you really enjoyed. I was gob-smacked that you waited in the very long line for more than 20 minutes for your turn (I had thought you might get bored) but of course you love animals so I really shouldn't be surprised. It was a great morning.

The other thing we did was attend a puppet show run by Constable Care. Matt, you made sure you sat right down the front and you were so good at asking questions of the presenter (including asking who was behind the stage holding the puppets!) and really enthusiastic about the first aid theme of the show.

It was great spending this time with you both.

Father's Day and Great-nanna's 80th birthday

 

Dear Matthew and Toby

 

For Father's Day this year we gifted your dad an old school Atari gaming system, which he loved, along with some special gifts that you had made at school Matt (including the painting and fact sheet below), which he loved even more. I can't say that we made him breakfast in bed (in fact, he did that for us) but he played soccer while we went to a baptism, so I'm hoping he had a good morning. In the afternoon we went to the new Dome café at Deep Water Point and enjoyed coffee and milkshakes with your grandad. We had luckily seen your gramps the day before at Toby's birthday and at the baptism so didn't miss out on seeing him over the weekend too. What lucky boys you are to have wonderful male role models in your lives! Hopefully they teach you how to be good dads yourselves one day (if that's what you want to do).

 

We also recently celebrated my nanna's 80th birthday at her house in Mandurah. As you're still not loving the car Tobes, you and I took the train down and Matt and daddy picked us up at the train station after which we drove to their house. Matt you played so beautifully with my cousin's two sons, kicking the soccer ball around, playing with some toys we'd brought with us and did some colouring in. You also loved playing with my aunty's new puppy, Solo. Tobes you enjoyed just being outside and picking strawberries with Gramps (who you also took your afternoon nap on). We had a big lunch and cake made by your Aunty Robyn.

 

I hope you both remember your great-nanna. She is kind and caring, and has put up with a lot during her life (i.e. her husband). But she is a formidable soul, who has told me extraordinary stories of how she used to run a poultry farm on her own with three small children. How the heck she managed that I have no idea, as some days I barely manage to get to the grocery story with a toddler and pre-schooler, but I'm guessing she probably had no choice in the matter. She always goes out of her way to interact with the two of you, and delights in your company. She never forgets anyone's birthday and despite it being her own 80th, she catered the party and served everyone herself. She is remarkable and I hope she sits in your souls somewhere if it happens that you aren't able to remember her.
